Pick of the Week
The Substance Film
The filmmaker's daring commentary examines the demanding standards for women's appearance and the dreaded aspects of growing older. Demi Moore delivers a masterful performance in the role of Elisabeth, a 50-year-old celebrity forced into presenting a workout series on TV. Pushed out due to her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to a secretive and terrifying process titled this experimental method. This creates a new version of herself named Sue, resulting in a progressively toxic connection among both women. This Friday, Paramount Plus
The Woman in Cabin 10
This Agatha Christie-esque mystery includes the talented actress playing Laura, a top-notch writer who takes a break from covering world issues to board a high-end voyage with a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and philanthropist, her spouse, and other affluent individuals. Yet once an unknown lady falls into the sea overnight and everyone insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts take over. Available now, on Netflix
Presence
Steven Soderbergh challenges his directorial skills with this clever ghostly tale filmed completely through the eyes of the phantom. When a household with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their fresh home, the camera – AKA the Presence – follows them around. The daughter appears aware of the ghostly being, and it looks like defensive toward her. But why? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, including a revelation that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema
This Self-Referential Film
The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame in this meta comedy caper. He portrays an egotistical Hollywood actor called Nicolas Cage who takes on a lucrative offer to visit a birthday party at a Mediterranean location for billionaire superfan Javi. Contacted by government spies to investigate the potential kingpin, his unique performing skills is put to the test. This Saturday, 9pm, Channel 4
The Black Phone
Derrickson's contained scarefest stands strong even without a continuation. Set in 1978 Denver, multiple kidnappings has rendered the youth frightened. After Finney is taken by “the Grabber” and held captive in a dungeon, he dreads a fatal end. Yet the non-functional line mounted nearby continues to ring, with eerie communicators providing assistance, while the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen might rescue him. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, on Film4
This Dramatic Portrait
In the battle between spirituality and money, the victory is clear for greed in this director's delightfully tacky biopic about the fallen religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield acts as the greedy Jim, who states at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals commence monetising the people's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of tacky decor, excessive cosmetics and bad faith, however Jessica Chastain achieves to show the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, late night, on Film4
The Spy Mystery
This week's additional entry by the same director delivers a intelligence thriller as precise as the polo necks used by Fassbender's intelligence officer. His assignment is to identify a mole within their ranks from five suspects – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are masters of calm composure, resulting in an engaging mental battle of deception or honesty takes place. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela participate the smart espionage amusement. This Friday, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
