An defence official has revealed that the MoD is actively looking into the potential security risks posed by Chinese vehicles, and staff have been advised to refrain from talking about classified matters in any cars.
Safety Advice for MoD Staff
During a recently aired interview on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to talk about classified material while riding in China-made cars.
He said that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, but noted that security is a issue in every contemporary vehicles.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any vehicle, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, the minister replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”
Broader Security Background
This announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring chaos to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been directing lasers at RAF aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.
The broader defence situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in every areas of government activities, from transport use to communication habits.
