No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an prompt halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
