Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing such treatments must be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced something flipping and you become ravenous," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
